Word to print-ready PDF

Word is made for documents, not for print layouts: it doesn't know bleed, works in RGB and can't export PDF/X. For simple prints like letters or handouts that's fine. For flyers with edge-to-edge backgrounds, here's a workaround.

1. Page size = trim size + bleed

Set the page size to the finished size plus bleed on every side (Layout → Size → More Paper Sizes). For an 8.5 × 11 in flyer with 1/8 in bleed: 8.75 × 11.25 in. Extend backgrounds all the way to the page edge.

2. Keep images sharp

Under File → Options → Advanced, turn on “Do not compress images in file” and set the default resolution to “High fidelity”.

3. Export with embedded fonts

File → Save As → PDF → Options and check “ISO 19005-1 compliant (PDF/A)” – this embeds all fonts.

4. Finish in PreflightPilot

Drop the PDF into PreflightPilot and choose your product. It recognizes the bleed from the page size, sets the trim size, converts RGB to CMYK and marks the file as PDF/X-4 when everything checks out. For real print layouts, the free layout editor LaydoStudio has bleed and CMYK export built in.

Check your PDF or image for free: bleed, fonts, CMYK and resolution – with the exact spot. Fix issues automatically, no upload.
